The “Jane Gifford”

The Return of the Jane Gifford

The return home in May 2009.

(Scow built by D Darroch 1908)

As you will see from these earlier photos of the restoration taken in June 2006 the scow was stripped right back to the hull. The repair work is being undertaken by a dedicated team of volunteers led by Peter Thompson & Hugh Gladwell in a shipyard at the end of Alnwick St, Warkworth.

On 16 May 2009 the still to be completed scow returned back up the Mahurangi to its permanent berth alongside the Warkworth Wharf. The Darroch family were part of the welcoming party and gave a generous donation towards the funds required for completion of the restoration project. Mayor Penney Webstser celebrated the return by re-christening her. A fully rigged Jane Gifford should be plying Kawau Bay later in the year. Meantime trips etc can be taken.

A Jane Gifford Society is being set up and if you wish to join the society, make a donation or volunteer to work on the restoration, you can contact Peter Thompson on 09425 8795, or Hugh Gladwell on 09-422 6523.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
