Brian Meiklejohn of Waiuku – Des, what to say, a fantastic weekend, on behalf of my parents, Jock and Jean, and my daughter, Michaela and I a BIG THANK YOU to all those who made the 150th such an amazing time. The fact that Dad was able to attend Saturday was great as he hasn’t been well, but to wake up on Sunday and have him rearing to go back was fantastic.
Carol’s launch was brilliant and I was glad to get our oldest head
(John) to sign my book. The fact that the rain stayed away added to the real feeling of history.
Thanks – you should be extremely proud of what happened over this weekend.

Jane Meiklejohn of Melbourne – Hi Debbie – Many thanks for your email about the Photo CD – It will be a nice surprise as I had forgotten about it.
The reunion was just fantastic, and so well organised. I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot about the Meiklejohns.
I had no idea about the family and it was odd (but nice) to see the name all over the place, on monuments, in the cemetery, on bridges and even a street called Meiklejohn Way! It was really fabulous.
I’ll be in NZ in July for my 2nd cousin’s 21st, which I am really excited about. I met cousins and 2nd cousins for the first time and I am so happy that I have a new family. Everyone I met at the reunion was really wonderful.
Thank you so much for making it happen. I can see that there was a lot of work that went in to it, and it’s opened up a new world for me.

1998 REUNION

300 Meiklejohns get together

Three hundred Meiklejohns met at Whangateau recently to celebrate 130 years of history and admire a family tree with 1100 names.
Prepared by Sally Berquist the family tree stretched around three walls of the Whangateau rugby club pavilion.
Showing the descendants of Captain James Strange Meiklejohn, mainly through the lines of three of their seven sons, its size and clarity was appreciated by the guests.
Apart from one speech, said organiser Ian Meiklejohn, there was no set structure to a day in which the main activity was talking.
The one speech, by another descendant, Donald Meiklejohn, encompassed and encouraged the younger generation.
Probably, he surmised, the young people had not wanted to come to the reunion, not appreciating its significance.
But he reminded them of their wonderful heritage and suggested they inform themselves by reading up about a history which was special to their family alone.
To help them, there was talk of bringing out a book after the reunion incorporating earlier written histories and anecdotal material contributed by guests.
Another descendant, Errol Jones, has already documented a considerable amount about the early days of the family in Omaha and its boat building activities there and at Mahurangi.
The family tree is not yet complete. When further information arrives from America, the list of descendants – which by 4.00pm on reunion day numbered about 1100 – will be on the move again.
