A number of other family members served in the military and other forces whilst others remained at home to provide vital services to our nation.

The following ‘In Memoriam’ notice no doubt expresses the feelings of the family for each of the above slain in war.

Birdsall – On June 22, 1915, Trooper William John Birdsall, aged 21 years, 3rd Auckland, Main Force, died of shrapnel wounds received at Anzac.

“Nameless his grave on battlefield gory,

Only a cross o’er a mound of brown earth,

Dead in the pride of his youth and his glory,

Far from his home and the land of his birth.

None near to mourn him save willows that, weeping

Bend o’er his grave, where their leaves in the fall

Cover a place where a soldier lies sleeping,

Waiting to to answer the final roll call.’

Inserted by his cousins (Meiklejohn) of ____________
