LETTER TO W.D.M. FROM A.M. HUBERT 9 MAY 1922
Transcript of a letter dated 9 May 1922 from A M Hubert (sister of Cordelia ) to W D Meiklejohn
May 9, 1922
Will try and write some more history.
Your grandfather James Meiklejohn and his seven sons built 4 vessels at Cardigan – about a stones throw from our home and another short distance from my fathers mill where all the plank and wood stuff was sawed. He took three of the vessels to the old country and sold them. The fourth was the one he went to NZ in. I do not remember the names of any of them and do not remember the dates.
Your father, mother and two sisters sailed from Charlottetown P.E.I. in Sept 1860. I cannot bring to my mind the name of the vessel though no doubt I knew for I was onboard of her the morning they sailed. Was one of the group whose likeness was taken. It was your Uncle Will whose likeness I have sent you that ruffled up his youngest brother Robert’s hair.
Vida and I are the only ones of the group that are left. It was a sad parting. I was sick for a week before I could go back home. Charlottetown is 30 miles from Cardigan. Now it is altogether different as they can go by train and a good many own automobiles now.
No doubt you know how they got your grandparent’s home on the island. Was about two miles from our home. A nice farm in a place called Roseneath. Your father and uncles had what they called a shanty where they lived daytime when they worked at the shipyard.
